Featured snippets is an amazingly simple strategy, that’s often overlooked when considering overall website SEO. And it’s also a very easy strategy to implement.
What Is A Featured Snippet?
You’ll have seen plenty, but may not know that’s what they’re called. When anyone types a question into Google, the answer will return in a ‘snippet’ format, with an invitation to read the rest of the article if you want.
For example – you may type in a query about ‘What’s A Schnauzer?’ – and up will come the response that it’s a dog – hotly followed by information on its heritage, the look, how popular they are, and a whole host of other information.
This information will be displayed in a visible block, with an outline around it and the content will have been collated not only from a mixture of page one search results, but also pages going back as far as 2 and 3. Which can only be good news for your SEO… as by ranking on Google page 1, it takes you above the organic #1 search rankings to ‘position 0’.
Featured Snippets Have No Bias
That’s right! They’re indifferent to big brands and sites that would normally dominate SERPS (Search Engine Results Page). So it makes no difference if you’re a brand-new start-up, a boutique or niche business or a company that’s a worldwide powerhouse.
Here Today – Gone Tomorrow
Having said that, just be aware that content does tend to shift. You may be featured one day, and not the next. Content is changing all the time within the arena, but having been featured at all means your SEO rankings and credibility will be much better.
Formatting Your Snippet Correctly
Start with fresh content – or re-work some old content. But always bear in mind that you need to be concise, whether you’re writing text, numbered lists, tables, bullet points or whatever.
Remember – Google loves content that is logically formulated (steps, numbers..) Remember – The most common word count in featured snippet content is 40 – 50 words, however you choose to present it.
For example – a table of information. A car dealer might produce a small table – the type of car, its release date, and the price. All the information in one neat block – perfect for a snippet
For example – a list. Five Ways To Ensure You Stick To Your Diet:
#1 Only use your shopping list
#2 Never shop when hungry
#3 Put up ‘fat’ pictures of yourself on the fridge … (etc)….
Ensure Your Heading Is Formatted Too
Use you search query header as H1, and then format subsequent paragraph headings, in the usual H2/H3 formats for maximum impact.
And You’re Off!
To get started, why not audit the keywords you rank for – and identify the question-based queries.
Then, it’s just a simple case of answering the most popular questions, remembering to utilise the tips mentioned in this article. Optimised properly, you’ll reach the holy grail of position zero . What are you waiting for!!!
